The clients were very clear that they wanted a “neat interior”. Which means they wanted low maintenance detailing and interiors, since it is a huge house. They were also clear as to how much dressing space and personal space each family member needs.
We follow this one design program for all the projects. We hand in a complete design portfolio that includes drawings for each and every detail of the entire project, before we begin anything on site. This proves to be very helpful on site as everything is been thoughout of from day one and thus it minimizes any changes. These details include everything that we are designing like wall murals, paintings, furniture pieces and lights too. We implemented exactly what we intended to while designing it. We have kept it simple, straight-line and yet creative and comfortable.
We entered the project as designers when the building was being constructed. Thus we got ample amount of freedom to do a lot of civil changes according to our interior layout. For example, we modified a lot in the dress and bathroom areas for each room, to fulfill the clients requirements. Another major civil change was with the public spaces and the sizes of them. We were also involved in the exterior look of the building; thus the material selection for the house elevations were also under our supervision.
The client was very cooperative and understanding, so half the challenges that designers normally face to convince the clients for things was minimized. However, the house was extremely big with huge double height public spaces and bedrooms and yet the client wanted minimum things in interior. Thus our challenge was to fill up the room enough to make it look cozy and intimate with minimum interior elements. This is where we used a lot of colours in fabrics and walls to create an illusion of a smaller space.
The best part about this project is that every piece of furniture, decorative lights (pedestals), wall murals that one sees, has been designed specifically for this project by us. It is customized especially for this project, and we think that is one of the main reasons why this project looks whole.
The challenge and creativity in this project lied in making one room and all the elements of that room look like they belong there and nowhere else in the house. Like the side tables and the center tables in a particular room would compliment its bed and couch and other furniture elements in that particular room only. This gave each room its own specific identity. However, the design language remained the same; minimalist and simplistic.
