The owner of this office is a known builder in Ahmedabad, which our firm does architectural projects for too. He was very clear about his requirements for the office, since the beginning; a director’s cabin, a conference space for 5 people, a smaller secondary cabin for accountant, an open staff area for 5-6 people and a reception area. The office has a built up of 1500 sqft. It being a small and compact space, I planned it such that there is visible clarity throughout the space. An angular pattern is seen to be a patent for this office; everything from the partitions, ceilings, floor to the partition screen made out of ropes, follows this.
Another aspect of design was to make it all in monochrome. Thus I have used the shades of grey and white in the ceilings, floors and partitions. Adding a tint of architectural reds and yellows, for the aesthetic purpose, was also a part of the well-thought design process. The yellows and reds are used in paintings, fabrics and light fittings as well.
This is one of the few projects where I had a complete freedom to explore and experiment. Everything from the paintings to wall murals and screens to the light fittings are specifically designed for this project. Thus, the end product is an amalgamation of light design, product design, mural design and interior design.
All the lights are made out of 1.6mm CRC sheet and given a natural finish on its exterior. I have repeated the shape of the light fittings throughout the office, with all the partitions reflecting an angled shape.
The pedestals and corner hangings are made out of 1.6mm perforated CRC sheet with 5mm perforation, so that it creates an enticing light and shadow pattern on the surfaces it falls onto. On the other hand, the task lights are made out of soli CRC sheets, such that no light is distracted anywhere else and falls straight onto the table.
The colours painted in the inner surfaces of these lights are architectural yellow and red, which are repeated in the fabrics and paintings of the office. The theme of the rest of the office is that of grey and white, with the furniture made up of metal and solid wood.
