Kanan holds a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from University of Mumbai; a Masters Degree in Urban Design and Architecture from Pratt Institute, New York; and post professional program from Domus Academy, Milan.
She worked with Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM), New York before heading back to India; where she was involved with design and engineering of AOL – Time Warner Twin Towers in Manhattan.
Her studio is a finalist at the World Architecture Festival 2016, and was invited to present their project at the festival in Berlin in November 2016 – among five Architects from India who made it this year, and Global Architects such as Zaha Hadid and Foster & Partners.
She is listed in the India’s TOP 50 Gen-Next Architects by Architect and Interiors India, in March 2017.
Kanan was featured as ’top 25 Achievers of 2016’, in December 2016, among entrepreneurs and professionals who have carved a niche in their respective fields, by Wow Hyderabad.
In early 2016, she was shortlisted among 60 Architects by Indian Institute of Architects to present their work at the National convention in Calicut, Kerala.
Her project was shortlisted as NDTV Design and Architecture’s top 5 national commercial designs in 2014, and at Trends Excellence awards.
She won awards for Product Design and commercial Design in South India by Indian Institute of Interior Designers, in 2015.
Her project was awarded ‘most indigenous and innovate use of materials’ by Indian Institute of Interior Designers Hyderabad, in 2014.
Her projects have featured in leading Indian design publications and prestigious coffee table books.
In 2010, Kanan gave a talk on Technology & its challenges at the Business Forum, San Francisco, for Structural Engineering Association of Northern California. In 2015, Kanan was a panellist for a discussion on ‘The Legacy of Charles Correa’, by IIID Hyderabad Chapter. She also participated as a panellist at the National Conference FOAID in December 2016. In September 2016, she moderated a panel discussion titled ‘Thinking Turf’, an initiative by ITP publishing.
Kanan presented her projects to the design fraternity in Hyderabad, as a part of ‘Design Yatra’ organised by the city. She serves as a Design Jury for final year students, Bachelors and Masters Program at Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University, Hyderabad.
Her studio’s project experience includes Architecture and Interior Design for luxury homes, high end corporate, hospitality, retail, and health care, education to product design, bespoke light fixtures, exclusive surfaces and contemporary furniture pieces.
With a team of highly enthusiastic Architects, engineers and crafts persons, a design studio and research lab, there is continued learning on design studies such as traditional and modernism, materiality, day-lighting, adaptive re-use and spatial experiences.
Kanan is extremely passionate about building and materials. She loves travelling and finds many of her inspirations in small villages across the world.
